Ecuador citizenship by marriage is available two years after your wedding, or two years after a foreign marriage is registered with Ecuador’s Civil Registry, provided you live in Ecuador on a valid residence visa. There’s no language or history exam on this route, the state charges $150, and you keep the passport you already have.
That makes it one of the quickest spousal naturalisations in the Americas. Most countries make a foreign spouse sit out years of residence first. Ecuador starts the clock at the wedding, and the Foreign Ministry’s own procedure sheet for nationality by marriage or de facto union sets out the whole thing in a few lines. What it doesn’t tell you is where couples lose months. That’s what this guide covers, alongside the visa you need first.

- Banking options available
- Fixed price. No surprise fees at closing
Who Qualifies for Ecuador Citizenship by Marriage?
You qualify for Ecuador citizenship by marriage if you’re married to, or in a registered de facto union with, an Ecuadorian citizen for at least two years, you live in Ecuador, and you hold a residence visa under Ecuador’s immigration law. Tourists and people with pending asylum claims can’t apply, whatever the length of the marriage.
The Foreign Ministry (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana) counts the two years differently depending on where you married:
| Your situation | When the two years start |
|---|---|
| Married in Ecuador | The date of the wedding |
| Married abroad | The date the marriage is registered with Ecuador’s Registro Civil |
| De facto union (unión de hecho) | The date the union is registered with the Registro Civil |
| Spouse became Ecuadorian by naturalisation | Only marriages or unions registered after your spouse naturalised count |
Read the second row twice. A couple who married in Miami in 2020 but only registered the marriage in Quito last month has a clock that started last month. We see this more than anything else. Couples assume the years of marriage they’ve already banked will count, then find out at the Dirección Zonal counter that Ecuador only knows about the marriage from the day it hit the Civil Registry. If you married abroad and Ecuador is even a possibility, register the marriage now.
The last row catches people too. If your spouse is a naturalised Ecuadorian, a marriage that predates their naturalisation can’t be used for this route at all.
Ecuador Permanent Residency by Marriage: The Visa You Need First
Ecuador permanent residency by marriage is a direct permanent visa for spouses and registered partners of Ecuadorian citizens. It’s applied for online through the e-VISAS platform, costs $50 to file and $175 on approval, and has no expiry date. It’s the usual way a foreign spouse meets the residence condition for naturalisation.
Article 63 of the Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana lists marriage or a legally recognised union with an Ecuadorian among the grounds for permanent residence. You skip the two years of temporary residence that most other foreigners serve. The Foreign Ministry’s permanent residence by marriage procedure asks for:
- A passport valid for at least six more months
- A 5 x 5 cm colour photo on a white background (JPG, under 1 MB)
- A criminal record certificate from your country of origin or every country you’ve lived in over the past five years, apostilled or legalised and translated, issued no more than 180 days before your last entry to Ecuador (adults only)
- The marriage or union certificate, registered with Ecuador’s Registro Civil
- Proof of lawful means of support under Ministerial Agreement No. 70 of 28 June 2024
- An interview at a Dirección Zonal or consulate
- Regular immigration status if you’re already in Ecuador
Pay the moment you submit. Unpaid e-VISAS applications are deleted at 23:55 Ecuador time on the day they’re filed.
Already on another visa? A rentista, retirement or investor residence permit also satisfies the residence condition, because the naturalisation rules accept any category under the law. Our full guide to residency in Ecuador compares those visas if you’re moving before the wedding.
Ecuadorian Naturalization Requirements for Spouses
Ecuadorian naturalization requirements for a foreign spouse are short: an apostilled birth record, the registered marriage or union certificate, an interview, proof you’re current with obligations to the Ecuadorian state, proof of lawful means of support if asked, and payment of $50 when you apply plus $100 when nationality is granted.
Compare that with the general route. Under the ordinary rules, a foreigner needs three years of regular domicile on a permanent visa and has to show knowledge of Spanish and of Ecuador’s history, geography and culture. The marriage article of the law lists no knowledge test, and the Foreign Ministry’s checklist doesn’t mention one either. The interview is the check.
What does the interview cover? Officially, your reasons for wanting Ecuadorian nationality. In practice, expect questions about how you met, where you live and how your household runs. It’s conducted in Spanish. One pattern we’ve noticed: applicants who’ve lived in Ecuador with their spouse for a while breeze through it, while couples who split their time between countries get more questions about where home actually is. The procedure requires domicile in Ecuador, so have a lease, utility bills or a property deed in both names ready.
| Requirement | Marriage route | Ordinary naturalisation |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting period | 2 years from wedding or registration | 3 years of regular domicile |
| Visa needed | Any residence category | Permanent residence |
| Spanish and civics knowledge test | Not listed | Required (with exemptions) |
| Interview | Yes | Yes |
| Government fees | $50 application + $100 grant | Set by the consular fee schedule |
Two discounts apply on the marriage route. Applicants aged 65 and over pay half, and people with a disability rating of 30% or more, certified by the Ministry of Public Health, pay nothing.
How to Get Ecuador Citizenship by Marriage: Step by Step
The full path from wedding to Ecuadorian passport takes a little over two years, and most of that is the statutory wait. Here’s the order that wastes the least time.
Step 1: Fix mismatches first. The Foreign Ministry checks that your names, surnames, place and date of birth and parents’ details match on every document. A missing middle name or a transposed date means a rejected file. Correct it at the source before you apostille anything.
Step 2: Get the marriage into the Registro Civil. Marry in Ecuador, or register your foreign marriage or union. This date starts your two years.
Step 3: Apply for the permanent residence visa on e-VISAS. File online, pay $225 in total, attend the interview and collect your cédula as a resident.
Step 4: Live in Ecuador for the waiting period. The law requires you to keep your residence status for the whole naturalisation process, and the route requires domicile in Ecuador.
Step 5: File together, in person. Book an appointment at the Foreign Ministry Dirección Zonal nearest your home. Both spouses must attend and sign the form jointly. Powers of attorney aren’t accepted. Your photo is taken on the spot, without glasses, hats or anything covering your face or hair.
Step 6: Interview and resolution. The Ministry contacts you by email for the interview and any missing documents, then emails the decision. The law gives it 90 days from filing.
Step 7: Renew your cédula within 45 days. Once the naturalisation resolution arrives, you have 45 days to swap your resident cédula for an Ecuadorian one. Miss the window and you’ll need a certificate of validity for your naturalisation letter, at $45, or $85 if it happens again. Then apply for your passport.
Add it up and the state’s share is $375: $225 for the residence visa and $150 for nationality. Apostilles, sworn translations and the criminal record certificate come on top, and they vary by country.
Ecuador Dual Citizenship: Do You Keep Your Passport?
Yes. Ecuador dual citizenship is protected by Article 8 of the 2008 Constitution, which says people who acquire Ecuadorian nationality aren’t obliged to renounce their nationality of origin. Whether your current country lets you keep its citizenship is a question for that country’s law.
Ecuador won’t ask you to choose, but some countries still cancel your citizenship automatically when you naturalise elsewhere. Check yours before filing. Our guide to dual citizenship pros and cons covers the common traps.
What does the Ecuadorian passport get you? It scores 60.4 and ranks 103rd on the Liberty Mundo Passport Freedom Index, with 93 visa-free destinations. On its own that’s modest. The real value is regional: under the Andean Migration Statute, Decision 878 of the Andean Community, Ecuadorian citizens can live and work in Bolivia, Colombia and Peru. That’s a useful backstop if you want a base in Colombia later without starting a new visa file from scratch.
As a second citizenship, it’s also cheap insurance. The government charges $375 all in, and because Ecuador uses the US dollar, there’s no currency risk on the fees.
What Happens If the Marriage Ends?
If the marriage ends before you file, you lose eligibility for this route, because the application depends on a current marriage or registered union. If it ends after your naturalisation resolution is issued, you stay Ecuadorian: the Foreign Ministry treats nationality granted this way as valid indefinitely unless you renounce it or the state annuls it.
Annulment needs a formal lesividad action, which the immigration authority can bring where a naturalisation was improperly obtained. A marriage of convenience is the obvious target. If the relationship is real, this shouldn’t keep you up at night.
Separated couples get burned in the middle stage. The law requires you to keep your residence status during the whole naturalisation process, and both spouses must sign the application together. A spouse who won’t come to the Dirección Zonal ends the application.
Renunciation is possible later. A naturalised Ecuadorian aged 18 or over can renounce by express declaration, as long as it doesn’t leave them stateless.
Tax: Does Ecuadorian Citizenship Make You Tax Resident?
No. Ecuadorian citizenship and Ecuadorian tax residence are separate. Under Article 4.1 of the Ley de Régimen Tributario Interno, as summarised in Ecuador’s tax residency note to the OECD, residence turns on spending 183 days or more in the country in a tax year, or on your main economic interests or family ties being there.
The catch for spouses is that the naturalisation route itself requires domicile in Ecuador, so most applicants will be tax resident during the wait anyway. Plan for it. Our Ecuador residency service includes the structuring side, and the guide to retiring in Ecuador covers how pensions are treated.
Americans, one line: a new passport doesn’t change your IRS position. The US taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, as the IRS guidance for citizens abroad spells out. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers wages and self-employment income only, never pensions, Social Security or investment income.
Common Mistakes That Delay Ecuador Citizenship by Marriage
Most delays come from paperwork, and almost all of it is avoidable.
- Registering a foreign marriage late. The clock starts at registration. Every month you wait is a month added to the end.
- Applying as a tourist. Visitors are excluded outright. Get the residence visa first.
- Letting the criminal record certificate expire. It must be issued within 180 days of your last entry to Ecuador. Order it close to your travel date.
- Skipping the cédula deadline. Forty-five days after the resolution. Miss it and you pay for a certificate you didn’t need.
- Assuming the ordinary-route exam applies. It doesn’t appear in the marriage requirements. People waste weeks studying for it.
The mismatch problem is the one we see stall files most often: a middle name abbreviated on a birth certificate and spelled out on a passport, or a mother’s maiden name missing from one record. Dead simple to fix early. Painful to fix with an appointment already booked and a corrected certificate still in the post from a foreign registry.
Ecuador vs Other Citizenship by Marriage Routes
Among the spousal routes Liberty Mundo has covered, Ecuador asks the least. Here’s how it stacks up.
| Country | Waiting period | Exam | Keep your passport? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ecuador | 2 years from wedding or registration, living in Ecuador | None listed | Yes |
| Colombia | 2 years after the resident (R) visa, about 5 years in practice | Spanish and civics, with exemptions | Yes |
| Portugal | More than 3 years of marriage, no residence needed | No exam; ties to Portugal can be contested | Yes |
| Italy | 2 years’ residence in Italy or 3 years abroad (halved with children) | Language requirement | Yes |
Portugal gives you the stronger passport and doesn’t need you to move. Ecuador is faster and cheaper, but you have to live there. Bottom line: if you’re already planning a life in Ecuador with your spouse, it’s hard to find an easier citizenship anywhere. Final Thoughts
Ecuador citizenship by marriage is about as close to a formality as naturalisation gets: two years, a registered marriage, a residence visa, an interview and $150. The time traps are all at the start. Register a foreign marriage early, clean up your documents and get the residence visa sorted, and the rest follows the calendar. If you’d rather hand the file to people who do this every week, our team can run the residence visa and the naturalisation together.
