UAE residency. A federal jurisdiction of seven emirates — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah — with zero personal income tax, a 10-year Golden Visa, a 5-year Green Visa, a full free-zone ecosystem, and Emirates ID. One of the most credible zero-tax relocation destinations in the world.
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates with a combined population of ~10 million, governed under a federal Constitution and a hybrid Sharia-plus-civil-law framework (with common-law variants in the DIFC and ADGM financial free zones). Personal income tax is zero at both federal and emirate level — no income tax, no CGT, no IHT, no wealth tax, no gift tax. Corporate tax of 9% applies to taxable profits above AED 375,000 per year (effective June 2023); qualifying free-zone income remains taxed at 0% subject to Qualifying Free Zone Person rules. Residency routes include the 10-year Golden Visa (property AED 2M, investor, exceptional talent, scientist), the 5-year Green Visa (skilled employee, freelancer, investor), and the standard 2-year Employment or Investor Visa with free-zone company backing.
Used by relocating founders, private-equity and hedge-fund principals, HNW families executing clean exits from the UK and Europe, and senior executives of DIFC / ADGM financial-services firms — for whom the UAE combines zero personal tax, a credible banking and legal ecosystem, DIFC/ADGM common-law financial free zones, and 100+ Double Taxation Agreements.
Why the UAE remains the strongest zero-tax HNW base in 2026
The UAE has moved from a pure zero-tax jurisdiction to a zero-personal-tax, 9%-corporate-tax jurisdiction with the introduction of federal Corporate Tax in June 2023 and Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax in 2025. For HNW individuals, the regime remains one of the cleanest in the world: no personal income tax, no CGT, no IHT, broad treaty network, world-class infrastructure, and two common-law financial free zones (DIFC, ADGM).
Zero personal income tax
The UAE imposes no personal income tax at either federal or emirate level. Salary, business profits, dividend, interest, rental, and capital-gains income received by a UAE-resident individual are untaxed at the UAE level. This has been a constitutional feature of the UAE since federation and is not linked to the 2023 Corporate Tax introduction. UAE-resident individuals are eligible for a UAE Tax Residency Certificate after 183 days of presence (or 90 days with qualifying economic ties), which triggers treaty access under 100+ DTAs.
10-year Golden Visa
The Golden Visa is a 10-year renewable residency introduced 2019 and expanded 2022. Principal routes: property investment (minimum AED 2,000,000 real-estate purchase, freehold or long-leasehold), public investment (AED 2,000,000 in investment funds or equivalent), exceptional talent (science, culture, sport, arts, digital technology), scientists (Mohammed bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Excellence), top students, entrepreneurs (approved startup pipeline), and senior executives. Covers spouse and children without dependency cap. Renewable on continued qualifying basis.
5-year Green Visa
The Green Visa is a 5-year renewable residency introduced 2022 for three categories: (1) skilled employees with Bachelor's+ and salary of at least AED 15,000/month, (2) freelancers with Ministry of Human Resources permit and net-worth/income evidence, (3) investors with an approved commercial licence and AED 1,000,000+ paid-up capital. Unlike the Employment Visa, the Green Visa is self-sponsored — no employer sponsorship required — making it a cleaner structure for independent consultants and remote workers.
Free-zone ecosystem
The UAE has ~45 free zones across the seven emirates, each with its own regulator, company-formation authority, and visa allocation. Widely-used zones: Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), International Free Zone Authority (IFZA), Meydan Free Zone, Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ), Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Free-zone companies get: 100% foreign ownership, streamlined incorporation, visa allocations, and 0% corporate tax on Qualifying Free Zone Person income (subject to strict QFZP rules).
9% federal Corporate Tax (above AED 375k)
The UAE introduced Federal Corporate Tax from 1 June 2023 (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022): 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000, 9% above. Qualifying Free Zone Persons maintain 0% on qualifying income subject to meeting substance, de minimis, and non-qualifying-income thresholds. Tax groups and relief are available. Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT) at 15% applies from 1 January 2025 for in-scope multinational groups with consolidated revenues of EUR 750M+. For most HNW personal-holding structures below thresholds, the effective corporate rate remains 0% or 9%.
DIFC and ADGM common-law financial free zones
The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) are financial free zones operating under an independent common-law framework (English common law as directly applicable, with DIFC and ADGM Courts staffed by senior common-law judges). Both offer: English-language corporate and contract law, common-law trust law, strong regulatory authorities (DFSA, FSRA), and separate company-formation regimes with full HNW visa-eligibility. Preferred base for hedge funds, family offices, and single-family-office structures.
What is included in your UAE residency engagement
Your personalised quote covers visa-route selection, free-zone or mainland company incorporation where required, Emirates ID and medical-fitness coordination, and banking introductions. Free-zone licence fees, property purchase fees, and government visa fees are billed separately at cost.
UAE vs other zero-personal-tax residency bases
The UAE competes with Monaco, Singapore, Bahamas, and Cayman Islands for zero-tax residency. Here is how the core metrics line up for a typical HNW relocation.
| Feature | UAE | Monaco | Singapore | Bahamas |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal income tax | 0% | 0% | 0–24% | 0% |
| Corporate tax | 9% (>AED 375k) / 0% FZ | ~25% | 17% | 0% |
| CGT / IHT | 0 / 0 | 0 / 0 (non-French) | 0 / 0 | 0 / 0 |
| Investment threshold | AED 2M property (Golden) | €500k bank + rental | S$10M (GIP) / S$2.5M+ | USD 750k property |
| Minimum days required | 0–183 (varies) | ~90-183 | ~183 | ~90 |
| VAT / GST | 5% VAT | 20% (French VAT) | 9% GST | 10% VAT |
| Climate / language | Desert / EN | Mediterranean / FR | Tropical / EN | Tropical / EN |
| DTA network | 100+ | ~40 | ~90 | ~30 |
Bottom line: The UAE wins on investment flexibility, DTA network depth, zero personal tax without any physical-presence minimum for the Golden Visa itself, and English-language common-law options (DIFC, ADGM). Monaco wins on pure prestige and Cote d’Azur lifestyle. Singapore wins on Asian-finance ecosystem depth. Bahamas wins on cost floor. For the overwhelming majority of HNW relocations outside Europe, the UAE is the first-choice answer.
How UAE residency works, step by step
Realistic timelines: Free-zone company incorporation runs 2 to 4 weeks. Golden Visa application runs 2 to 6 weeks post-property-registration. Green Visa runs 2 to 4 weeks. Emirates ID and medical fitness run 2 to 4 weeks post-entry-permit. Total end-to-end typically 6 to 12 weeks.
Eligibility and application pack
We confirm you qualify for the program, then gather your documents and assemble the complete application pack.
Company incorporation and visa application
We incorporate the selected free-zone or mainland entity, secure the visa quota, and submit the entry-permit application (for clients outside UAE) or status-change application (for clients already in UAE on visit). For property-based Golden Visa, we coordinate the Dubai Land Department or Abu Dhabi DMT title registration in parallel. For Green Visa freelance track, we coordinate the Ministry of Human Resources freelance-permit application.
Arrival, Emirates ID, long-term track
On arrival (or in-UAE status change), we complete biometric capture, medical-fitness test, Emirates ID enrolment, and visa stamping. UAE banking follows. We then help establish Tax Residency Certificate eligibility (183-day or 90-day test) for treaty claims. Long-term track runs to Golden Visa renewal at year 10 with continued qualifying basis, lifetime residence for investors maintaining AED 2M+ real-estate.
Optional UAE residency add-ons
UAE relocation clients often layer one or two of these onto the base engagement. Pricing is case-dependent; every quote is bespoke.
DIFC / ADGM entity and SFO structuring
Incorporation of a DIFC or ADGM Single Family Office, Private Fund, or Holding Company under common-law DIFC/ADGM companies law. Coordination with DFSA or FSRA regulatory filings where activity requires licensing, and with DIFC Courts / ADGM Courts on constitutional matters. Suitable for family-office, hedge-fund, and investment-holding structures requiring English-language common-law substance in the Gulf.
UAE Corporate Tax registration and planning
Corporate Tax registration with the Federal Tax Authority (mandatory for all UAE-resident entities from 2023 regardless of profit), Qualifying Free Zone Person structuring where applicable, transfer-pricing file preparation, Economic Substance Regulations (ESR) filings, and Pillar Two / DMTT analysis for in-scope multinational groups (consolidated EUR 750M+).
Home-country exit tax advisory
For UK-departing clients: coordination on Statutory Residence Test and post-April-2025 long-term-resident rules. For Indian-departing clients: Section 6 residency analysis, exit capital-gains planning. For French clients: tax-residency break. For US persons: full expatriation planning (renunciation and Section 877A exit tax) where required. Focus is on avoiding an ineffective exit that leaves the client caught by both jurisdictions.
Property acquisition support (Dubai / Abu Dhabi)
Full support on Dubai or Abu Dhabi freehold residential acquisition: property identification, Dubai Land Department or ADM registration, developer-contract review, mortgage arrangement (where applicable), and Golden-Visa-eligible structuring (AED 2M+ single or combined holdings). Working with UAE real-estate agencies (Better Homes, Allsopp & Allsopp, Luxhabitat) and law firms on due-diligence and completion.
DMCC / RAKEZ / IFZA company structuring
Full service on DMCC, RAKEZ, IFZA, or Meydan free-zone company formation beyond the included scope: bespoke licence-activity matching, multi-shareholder structuring, holding-company-below-operating-company architectures, and ongoing corporate-secretarial, UBO, and visa-quota management. Particularly suitable for multi-entity UAE operations or group holding-company consolidations.
Family dependant applications
Spouse / partner and dependent children applications on the primary applicant's Golden, Green, Employment, or Investor Visa. Family members share the primary's residency rights and access to UAE schooling and private healthcare. Golden Visa has no dependency cap and includes spouse, children of any age if unmarried, and in some cases dependent parents.
UAE residency: frequently asked questions
If you are considering the UAE as a tax-residency base, these are the questions we hear most often on discovery calls.
Does the UAE really have zero personal income tax?
Yes. The UAE imposes no personal income tax at federal or emirate level on salary, business profits, dividend, interest, rental, or capital-gains income received by a UAE-resident individual. This is a constitutional feature that long predates the 2023 Corporate Tax introduction. There is no personal tax return, no withholding, and no annual filing. UAE-resident individuals do pay 5% VAT on most goods and services, and property and tenancy-related municipal fees (e.g., Dubai Housing Fee at 5% of annual rent, Abu Dhabi municipality fees).
What about the new UAE corporate tax?
The UAE introduced Federal Corporate Tax from 1 June 2023 under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022. The rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 per year and 9% above. Qualifying Free Zone Persons (QFZP) maintain 0% on qualifying income subject to substance, de minimis, and non-qualifying-income tests. Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT) at 15% applies from 1 January 2025 for in-scope multinational groups with EUR 750M+ consolidated revenues. For HNW personal-holding and single-family-office structures below DMTT thresholds, the effective rate remains 0% or 9%.
How do I get the Golden Visa?
The Golden Visa has multiple qualifying routes. Most common: (1) property investment — minimum AED 2,000,000 freehold or long-leasehold real-estate purchase in a designated Golden-Visa-eligible district, (2) investor — AED 2,000,000 in an approved investment fund or comparable financial instrument, (3) exceptional talent — nominated in science, culture, sport, arts, or digital technology, (4) entrepreneur — approved startup with minimum project size, (5) senior executive — minimum salary AED 50,000/month with managerial role in an accredited company. Valid 10 years, renewable, covers spouse and children.
What is the difference between Green Visa and Employment Visa?
The Green Visa is a 5-year self-sponsored residency introduced 2022. The Employment Visa is a 2-year sponsor-dependent residency tied to a specific UAE employer. Green Visa is suitable for skilled independent professionals (salary AED 15k+, Bachelor's+), freelancers (with Ministry of Human Resources permit), and investors (AED 1M+ paid-up capital in an approved commercial licence). Employment Visa is tied to the employer and ends when employment ends. Green Visa is the cleaner structure for independent consultants, remote workers, and low-staff free-zone owners.
How many days do I need to spend in the UAE?
For residency-visa validity: no formal minimum-day requirement on Golden Visa; Green Visa and Employment Visa require entry at least every 180 days to keep the visa valid. For UAE Tax Residency Certificate (treaty access): either 183+ days of UAE presence in the tax year, or 90+ days of UAE presence with the UAE as the usual or primary place of residence and evidence of a permanent UAE home or UAE employment. For home-country tax-break purposes, day-counting is typically the controlling factor and needs case-by-case planning.
Does UAE residency end my home-country tax?
It depends on your home country. For UK residents: cleanly breaking UK residence under the Statutory Residence Test and establishing UAE residence plus UAE Tax Residency Certificate typically removes UK tax on non-UK-source income; post-April-2025 long-term-resident rules add IHT complexity. For Indian residents: Section 6 analysis and 182/120-day tests control. For US persons: UAE residency does NOT end US citizenship-based tax; only renunciation and Section 877A planning does. Pre-move exit planning is essential in every case.
Do I need a free-zone company for UAE residency?
Not necessarily. Routes not requiring a company: Golden Visa (property or investor or talent), Green Visa (skilled employee or qualifying freelance permit), Retiree Visa (age 55+ with property or income/savings thresholds), Student Visa, and dependant visas on a primary applicant. Routes requiring a company: Employment Visa (sponsored by a UAE employer), Investor / Partner Visa (shareholder in UAE LLC or free-zone company), and Green Visa investor track. For most HNW clients, a free-zone or mainland holding entity is still valuable for operating visas for staff and for commercial licensing.
Which free zone should I choose?
Depends on activity, budget, and regulatory fit. IFZA, Meydan, RAKEZ: general-trading and consulting, competitive pricing (AED 12k-25k/yr), flex-desk or dedicated-office options. DMCC: premium commodities-trading and professional services, higher cost, strong regulatory reputation. DIFC / ADGM: financial services and family office, common-law framework, highest cost, DFSA/FSRA regulated. JAFZA: logistics, trading, and industrial. SHAMS, Ajman FZ, UAQ FTZ: entry-level media and freelance. Selection happens in route-selection step of the engagement.
Is the UAE in the Common Reporting Standard?
Yes. The UAE is a participating jurisdiction in the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) since 2018 and exchanges financial account information annually with 100+ reportable jurisdictions. The US is not a CRS participant; the UAE has a Model 1 FATCA IGA with the US. UAE banks and financial institutions perform full CRS and FATCA reporting to the Federal Tax Authority (Competent Authority). The zero-personal-tax regime does not exempt UAE-resident account holders from CRS reporting of foreign accounts in other participating jurisdictions.
Can I bring my family to the UAE?
Yes. Spouse, children, and dependent parents can be included on the primary applicant's Golden, Green, Employment, or Investor Visa. Golden Visa has no dependency cap and includes spouse, unmarried children of any age, and in some cases dependent parents. Family members access UAE schooling (public for Emirati-family-tied and wide choice of British, American, Indian, French international schools) and private healthcare (with employer or privately arranged insurance — health insurance is mandatory for Dubai and Abu Dhabi residents).
Does UAE residency lead to citizenship?
Generally no. UAE citizenship (nationality) is not a normal-course outcome of residency. Naturalisation is tightly restricted and typically granted only by specific decree for exceptional contribution (senior scientists, artists, investors identified by name by UAE authorities). The UAE Cabinet introduced a 2021 framework expanding discretionary naturalisation, but this remains a narrow and high-bar route. HNW clients seeking citizenship should treat the UAE as a residency-and-passport-of-convenience destination rather than a naturalisation target; alternative passport routes (Malta, Caribbean CBI) may run in parallel if a second citizenship is the goal.
What are the honest downsides of the UAE?
Four: First, summer heat and humidity (May-September) makes outdoor life genuinely limited and drives heavy reliance on air-conditioning and indoor venues. Second, the UAE is a sharia-influenced civil-law jurisdiction on personal-status and family matters for UAE-national defaults, which requires specific will-registration (DIFC Wills Service Centre or ADJD Non-Muslim Wills Register) to avoid forced-heirship outcomes for non-Muslims. Third, cost of living in Dubai (schooling, housing, imported goods) is high; Abu Dhabi is comparable. Fourth, the introduction of 9% Corporate Tax and 15% DMTT from 2023-2025 has removed the UAE's pure-zero-corporate reputation for large groups. These are navigable but should inform expectations.
Ready to plan your UAE move?
UAE casework is Golden-Visa-and-Green-Visa-driven. The right combination — Golden Visa via AED 2M property, Green Visa via skilled-employee or freelance route, or Investor Visa via free-zone entity — plus the right free-zone or mainland selection and a clean home-country exit determines the whole arc of the relocation. Submit an application and a senior advisor will come back within twenty-four hours with a personalised quote, route recommendation, and a tax-residency-compatible arrival plan.
