What Did Vanuatu Say About Andrew Tate Vanuatu Citizenship?

Vanuatu’s Citizenship Commission said it hasn’t made a decision to revoke Andrew Tate’s citizenship because there’s currently insufficient evidence. Chairman Charlie Maniel added that Tate’s 2022 application passed due diligence checks through Interpol, the Vanuatu Financial Intelligence Unit and immigration authorities, and that nothing adverse surfaced at the time of assessment.

The office’s reasoning is blunt. Citizenship decisions, it said, have to rest on verified information available when an application is decided, and on information that emerges years later only through the legal routes the Act allows. OCCRP carried the same statement the same day.

Tate and his brother Tristan have been held in Miami since July, fighting extradition to Britain on charges including rape, assault and facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation. Both deny wrongdoing. Neither has been convicted.

Why Did Reports Say the Passport Was Revoked?

ABC News reported on 21 September 2026 that Vanuatu had revoked Tate’s citizenship and passport, and outlets worldwide repeated it within hours. Three days later, the Citizenship Commission said no such decision exists. The gap between those two dates is a wake-up call about how quickly a political signal gets reported as a legal fact.

Even in the original ABC piece, Glen Craig, who led a commission of inquiry into Vanuatu’s citizenship programs, noted that the government had limited grounds to revoke without a conviction. That caveat got buried. I’ve watched this play out before: a minister talks tough, a headline runs, and the paperwork never follows because the statute won’t support it.

When Can Vanuatu Revoke Citizenship by Investment?

Vanuatu can only take citizenship away from an investor in narrow cases set out in the Citizenship Act [Cap 112]. The two routes relevant here are a court finding that citizenship was obtained by false representation, fraud or concealment of a material fact, and a prison sentence of 10 years or more. Neither applies to Tate today.

The Vanuatu Citizenship Office confirms the fraud route on its own website: a person found to have obtained citizenship by false representation, fraud or concealment ceases to be a citizen 30 days after that finding. Being accused of a crime abroad isn’t on the list.

That matters well beyond one controversial client. What Does This Mean for Vanuatu’s CBI Program?

Vanuatu’s citizenship by investment program stays open, but its passport has carried a Schengen visa requirement since the Council of the EU ended the exemption in December 2024. The Tate episode keeps Brussels’ concerns about vetting in the spotlight without changing the legal position of existing citizens.
