Residency, explained

What a second residency actually gets you.

Three things people mix up constantly: residency, citizenship, and tax residency. Get the distinctions right and the whole strategy falls into place.

Residency is not citizenship

A residency permit lets you live, bank, and base yourself in a country. A passport makes you one of its citizens. Most clients want the first and eventually earn the second: hold residency long enough, meet the presence rules, and naturalisation follows. If the passport itself is the goal, start with our second passport programs instead.

Tax residency is the real prize

Legal residency and tax residency are different things. Most countries only treat you as a tax resident once you spend roughly 183 days a year on their soil. Become tax resident in a territorial or zero-tax jurisdiction, exit your old system cleanly, and your foreign income can be taxed at exactly zero. One caveat: US citizens stay in the IRS net wherever they live.

Four main doors in

Nearly every program on this page is a variation of four routes: invest (property, business, or a bank deposit), prove passive income (pensions and rents), work remotely on a digital nomad visa, or retire on a pension. A fifth door, citizenship by descent, skips residency entirely if your ancestry cooperates. Our country guides cover each route in depth.

Questions

Second residency, answered.

The questions every client asks in the first call, answered straight.

What is a second residency?

A second residency is legal permission to live in another country while keeping your current citizenship. It usually starts as a temporary permit, upgrades to permanent residency after a set period, and gives you a genuine fallback: somewhere to live, bank, and do business if things sour at home.

What is the difference between residency and a second passport?

Residency lets you live in a country. Citizenship makes you a member of it, passport included. Residency is faster and far cheaper, typically thousands rather than hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hold residency long enough and most countries let you naturalise, so a residency today is often the cheapest route to a passport tomorrow.

Do I actually have to live in my second country?

Some programs demand real presence, typically 183 days a year if you also want tax residency. Others ask for almost none: Panama and Paraguay keep permits alive on a visit every year or two, and the UAE asks for one day every six months. Check the min-stay figure on each country card above.

Will a second residency lower my taxes?

It can, but only if you genuinely shift your tax residency and cut ties with your current system properly. Spend the required time in a territorial or zero-tax country and your foreign income can legally fall to zero. US citizens are the exception: the IRS taxes Americans on worldwide income wherever they live, so the planning looks different.

How much does a second residency cost?

Most programs on this page land between US$3,500 and US$15,000 all-in for government and legal fees. Investment-based programs are a different animal: property or deposit requirements run from tens of thousands to several million dollars in places like Cayman or Bermuda. The From figure on each country card shows the typical all-in professional cost.

How long does it take to get residency?

Anywhere from about 30 days in fast jurisdictions like Georgia and the UAE to a year or more for restrictive programs. Most mainstream applications complete in two to six months once documents are apostilled and filed. Budget extra time for background checks and document legalisation; that step delays more files than anything else.

What documents will I need?

Nearly every program wants the same core file: a clean police record, an apostilled birth certificate, proof of income or funds, a medical check, and passport copies. We collect everything through a secure portal and a case manager walks you through each item, so nothing gets filed twice or notarised wrong.

Which is the easiest second residency to get?

For most applicants: Paraguay (one visit and a modest bank deposit), Panama (Friendly Nations visa), or the UAE (Golden Visa with a one-day-per-six-months presence rule). Easiest shifts with your nationality, income type, and goals, which is exactly what a thirty-minute strategy call pins down.

Can a second residency lead to citizenship?

In most countries, yes. Permanent residents can typically naturalise after a qualifying period, commonly between two and ten years depending on the country and your actual time on the ground. Argentina and Paraguay sit at the fast end; much of Western Europe sits at five to ten. If a passport is the end goal, we plan the residency around that timeline from day one.

Is getting a second residency legal?

Completely. Every program on this page is an official government scheme, written into that country’s immigration law and processed by its immigration authority. What is illegal is hiding income you still owe tax on at home. Proper planning does the opposite: exit cleanly, document everything, and pay exactly what the law says, which is often zero.
