These Little Known Countries are not Internationally Recognised

Countries with no extradition are becoming rare. However, to be able to sign an international treaty, such as an extradition treaty, both countries must recognize each other. Where one country doesn’t recognize the other, they can’t sign an extradition treaty or indeed any kind of international treaty.

So, let’s have a look at our list of countries with no extradition in 2023:

Abkhazia

  • Geography: Located in the Caucasus Mountains on the eastern coast of the Black Sea.
  • Population: 247,982
  • Government type: presidential republic
  • Status: Abkhazia is recognized as an independent state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Nauru; Georgia considers it an occupied territory and does not recognize its existence as a separate country. Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in 1999 after fighting a war with Georgia over control of the region from 1992 to 1993.

Republic of China (Taiwan)

Amongst the countries with no extradition, Taiwan is perhaps the best known. China claims Taiwan is a breakaway republic and should be treated as part of China. Dues to China’s economic clout, most of the world follows China’s wishes.

  • Taiwan is officially known as the Republic of China (ROC).
  • Taiwan has its own passport, currency, and military. However, it does not have membership in the UN or with any of its organizations like UNESCO or WHO.
  • The United States also refuses to recognize Taiwan’s independence, although they do have unofficial diplomatic relations. The US gives no official recognition to the Republic of China and abides by the One-China policy stipulated by PRC (People’s Republic of China) law.

Although Taiwan has created a working government that maintains an independent stance from mainland China, there are still questions about its future as a sovereign country.

Taiwan maintains good relations with the international community. However, it’s largely unrecognized, and extradition to and from Taiwan is difficult.

Countries with No Extradition: Northern Cyprus

The most interesting of the European countries with no extradition, Northern Cyprus also offers good weather and cheap real estate.

Northern Cyprus is a self-proclaimed state that only Turkey recognizes as an independent republic. It has a population of roughly 294,200, and the capital is North Nicosia. After gaining independence from the British Empire in 1960, Cyprus became a popular tourist destination—until Turkish forces invaded in 1974. The United Nations Security Council condemned the invasion, yet it only led to further instability on the island and ethnic tensions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Today, Northern Cyprus still maintains de facto control over 36% of the territory of Cyprus, but it remains unrecognized by any other country in the world except for Turkey (which supports it militarily).

Somaliland

Somaliland is one of the most interesting countries with no extradition in Africa.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but does not have the international recognition it seeks. The country has about 3.5 million people, its own currency (the Somaliland Shilling), and a working government that holds elections. While the U.N. doesn’t recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, it does allow individual countries to do so if they choose. Unfortunately for Somaliland, no country has yet decided to recognize it as its own nation.

Kosovo

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. However, not all countries recognize Kosovo as an independent nation. Kosovo’s status is controversial, but most European nations and the United States recognize it. Serbia, Russia, Spain, Greece, Romania, Cyprus, Brazil, and a handful of other countries do not recognize Kosovo as an independent state. It should be noted that Kosovo is recognized by the US and the UK.

Nagorno-Karabakh Republic

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) is a region located between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Ethnic Armenians mostly populate the area. In 1991, the NKR declared independence from Azerbaijan, but the international community has not recognized this. There are ongoing negotiations to resolve this conflict.

Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) is a partially recognized state that controls a thin strip of land along the western side of the Sahara Desert, between Morocco to the north and Mauritania to the south. The SADR is recognized by other African countries through membership in the African Union (AU), but not by any other major global organization.

Transnistria

The only place that is officially not part of Moldova, Transnistria has a history of independence dating back to the mid-20th century. During World War II, Transnistrian forces fought alongside Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union on sides (German and Romanian, respectively), which eventually won the war. The conflict has been frozen due to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

South Ossetia

This country, along with Abkhazia, is recognized as a sovereign state by Russia, while the rest of the world considers it a part of Georgia. South Ossetia has an economy that is almost entirely supported by Russia and was created in 1991. The capital is Tskhinvali or Tskhinval in Ossetian. Even though this country isn’t officially independent, many people enjoy the beauty of its mountains and lakes.

Palestine (State of Palestine)

countries with no extradition
Palestine

Palestine is a de facto state in the middle east. It’s not officially recognized y the US or the UK as a country. It has membership of the UN as an observer.

As a non-member observer state at the UN, Palestine does not have a seat in the General Assembly. But the PA’s leadership can participate in meetings of various UN bodies, including by making speeches before member states or introducing resolutions in the General Assembly. At such forums, Palestinian officials have frequently used their status to criticize Israel for alleged human rights violations and war crimes committed against Palestinians during its decades of occupation of territory claimed by Ramallah for a future Palestinian state.

Palestine has no extradition treaties.
