Three doors to a second passport.
Money, blood, or time. Every legitimate citizenship route on earth comes down to one of the three, and picking the wrong one wastes years.
Money: citizenship by investment
Fifteen governments will naturalise you for a contribution or qualifying investment, no residence required. The Caribbean five run from roughly US$240k all-in; Vanuatu moves in about 30 to 60 days. What you are buying is speed and certainty. Due diligence is real, and clean paperwork matters more than the size of the cheque.
Blood: citizenship by descent
The best-value passports on this page cost under US$15k in professional fees because you already qualify by ancestry. An Italian great-grandparent, an Irish grandparent, or a Polish line of descent can each unlock an EU passport with roughly 190 visa-free destinations. Slower, cheaper, and permanent for your children too. Check where your programs rank on our Passport Freedom Index.
Time: fast-track naturalization
Argentina naturalises after about two years of real residence, Paraguay and Uruguay in three to five. The trade is presence: these routes want you actually living there. Pair one with a second residency chosen for tax treatment and the years on the ground work for you twice.
Second passports, answered.
The questions every client asks in the first call, answered straight.
What is a second passport?
A second passport is full citizenship in another country, held alongside your current one. Unlike a residency permit, it can never expire, gives you an unconditional right to live and work there, passes to your children, and gives you travel and banking options no single government can switch off.
How much does citizenship by investment cost?
The cheapest credible programs land around US$115k all-in (Nauru, São Tomé & Príncipe). The Caribbean five run roughly US$240k to US$275k all-in for a single applicant, and Turkey starts at a US$400k property that you can resell after three years. Every figure on the cards above is the typical total, not the teaser number.
What is the cheapest way to get a second passport?
Ancestry, if you have it. Citizenship by descent typically costs US$4,500 to US$15,000 in professional and government fees, because you already qualify by blood. An Irish grandparent or an Italian line of descent can unlock an EU passport for less than the paperwork on a Caribbean donation.
How fast can I get a second passport?
Vanuatu moves in roughly 30 to 60 days, the fastest legitimate route anywhere. Caribbean CBI programs run three to six months. Descent claims take from a few months (Hungary) to three years (Italy backlogs). Naturalization is the slow road: two to five years of residence before you can even apply.
Can I keep my current citizenship?
Usually. Most countries on this page allow dual citizenship, and none of the CBI programs require renouncing anything. The constraint is your current nationality: a handful of countries (China, India, Singapore, and others) do not permit dual citizenship, which changes the strategy. We check this first on every file.
Do I have to live in the country?
For CBI, essentially no; most programs have zero residence requirement (Antigua asks for five days within five years). Descent claims never require moving. Naturalization is the opposite: those timelines only count if you genuinely live there, which is why we usually pair them with a residency plan you would actually enjoy.
Will a second passport lower my taxes?
By itself, no. Tax follows where you live, not what passports you hold, so the tax play is residency, not citizenship. The one exception is US citizens: the IRS taxes Americans wherever they live, and a second passport is the prerequisite for the only full exit, renunciation. That is a serious, irreversible decision we model carefully before anyone acts.
Is citizenship by investment legal and safe?
Every program we place clients in is written into that country’s nationality law and run by its government. The real risks are different: programs close or reprice with little notice, and weak due diligence files get refused with fees lost. Clean source-of-funds evidence and an honest application are what keep it safe.
Can a second citizenship be revoked?
It is rare but real. Citizenship obtained by fraud or material misrepresentation can be stripped, which is another reason the file has to be clean the first time. Citizenship by descent is the most durable of all: you are recognised as having been a citizen all along, not granted a new status.
Which second passport is the strongest?
The EU descent passports lead this page at roughly 190 visa-free destinations, with Ireland and Germany at the top. Among CBI programs, St Kitts & Nevis leads the Caribbean at about 157. Rankings move constantly as visa deals change; our Passport Freedom Index tracks the live standings.
